The Bowers-Olson residence is a 3,000 square foot penthouse-level condominium in the middle of the Colorado's Beaver Creek ski resort. In response to the problem of packing a two-story residence into the sloped attic of a rustic mountain lodge, the project reorganizes living space vertically to produce a section in which fire (a fireplace) and vertical circulation (a stair) can share the same planametric footprint.  Stair and fireplace are laced between two walled masses creating a residual "crevasse" by which to navigate between the first and second floors. 

In addition, the residence maintains a kitchen which serves as the intersection between all dining, living and entertainment areas.
